History from home

COVID-19 has closed schools and canceled summer camps and left kids and parents to our own resources. The kids in my life are just finishing up 10th and 8th grades respectively, and helping with their school work has been a wake-up call. Not sure what has been happening in classrooms, but their online school – apart from the “hard” subjects like math and science – is pretty vegetarian, i.e., there’s no meat to it.

With all the great liberal arts-focused content available online from vetted sources, it’s not difficult to put together a decent learning plan to supplement the school’s online curriculum. Over the next month, I’ll be pulling together themed mini-courses focused on history, literature, culture and the arts that include readings and activities that you can work through with your kids, based on free, online resources that are accessible to anyone with an internet connection. Since most of my kids’ curriculum is globocentric and pretty much excludes anything “American,” I will be focusing on American* themes, authors, poets, events and creators since I see it as a gap.  Since I am based in the Great Lakes Midwest and I want them to understand and love this region, there will likely be a regional and local slant as well.

I hope to update the site multiple times a week, so check back frequently.

*Note that my definition of American is the broad one, and encompasses both American continents.
